JJ DAM — User License Agreement (version 1.0)
What am I signing? (TLDR)
By downloading anything from this archive you're agreeing to the following — in plain language:
- You can use this for free, but not for everything. OK for journalism, classroom and academic work, research, and non-commercial editorial use. Not OK for advertising, merchandise, fundraising for unrelated causes, or anything that mocks, demeans, or targets the people in the photos.
- You don't own the work. You're getting permission to useit in your own work. You can't resell it, license it to anyone else, or claim it as your own.
- Always give credit. Every time you use a photo, audio clip, or document — including on social media — credit it as: “Photo (or audio) by Richard Ross / Juvenile In Justice”. A working link back to this site, where reasonable, is appreciated.
- Don't alter the work to mislead.Cropping, color correction, and similar light editing are fine. Don't make composites, deepfakes, or audio cuts that change what was actually said or shown. Don't strip the work of its context to imply a different story than the one Richard documented.
- Be respectful of the people in the photos and recordings. They're real kids who agreed to be documented under specific circumstances. Don't try to identify subjects beyond what's already in the captions, don't use their images for hate speech or harassment, and don't share them in any way that puts them at risk.
If your use doesn't fit these terms, email info@juvenile-in-justice.com to discuss a different license. We're generally happy to grant broader rights for the right project — just ask first.
